Computers, Friend Or Foe
Remember The Simple Life?
By: James A. Warholic
Behind The Web
Imagine all the time saved by the powerful programs and computers. Now imagine all the lost time when those same programs or computer hardware stops functioning.
Just when you go to do something that you positively need to get done, a roadblock goes up.
Well, I needed to burn a CD slide show for my wife using Picasa from Google. First off, Picasa is a cool program for fixing, editing, cropping, finding, cataloging, and fine tuning all your digital pictures and photos. The program offers a cool feature of exporting a slide show by automatically burning a CD or DVD photo slideshow onto a disk. The slideshow plays automatically or can be advanced manually. Plus Picasa is Free.
Everything was going great. My wife, a teacher, had taken 160 pictures of her students in class. We fine tuned the pictures and cropped some into close-up shots of various students. Once we had the order arranged then we were going to export it out to a photo slideshow CD. This is where the problem started.
The computer would not recognize the CD/DVD Read Write drive. It would only function as a Read drive and the Write section was not functioning. Tried various CD writing programs and they all responded the same way. It appeared as though the CD/DVD drive was the culprit. I remembered that we had an old computer with a read/write CD drive. Popped out the drive from the old computer and installed it into the newer computer. Sure enough, the operating system found the drive and everything worked just fine.
So, a half hour job became a two hour job; including all the troubleshooting that had taken place. While I have the experience with electronics and computer troubleshooting; most people do not. As our world has gotten more technical, and devices have included more electronics, and computers have more programs that share resources with one another, any small glitch can cause a major hiccup in our daily lives.
Maybe it was a more simple life before we had all this stuff in our life and times.

Notice: Hosting Account Exceeds Plan Limitations - Please Upgrade
Talk about a rude morning e mail to wake up to:
"Notice: Hosting Account Exceeds Plan Limitations - Please Upgrade"
I just went to the computer to check my email and that message above hit me in the face. I am saying no way to myself! We have several servers with 10 GB of storage on one of the servers and various websites take up a total storage of 188.1 MB on this one. So I place a phone call to the hosting provider and tell them the same thing. Now, I am getting a little ticked off to say the least because the auto generated email is telling me to upgrade my storage.
After telling the service provider my story I start checking out the various email accounts; thinking an email account is filling up the entire storage capacity. Nope - it was not. The provider wanted to send me up to the next level of service, which would have been a charge to my account because we are running a virtual dedicate server for the account. When this was mentioned about the additional sevice charge, you can image it did not sit well with me. However, the manager was helpful on the other end after I pushed a little further to tell them that I was a long time customer and informed this person on the same story I had previously stated. She mentioned that the control panel does show the total disk usage with the virtual server but doesn't break it out. I was over capacity. I would need to check directory by directory, databases, logfiles, and other various programs running on the server.
Well, when she mentioned "logfiles" that started me thinking that maybe the log files have been accumulating. Sure enough, one of the log files amounted to nearly 3 GB worth of information. Needless to say, it was time to do some log file maintenance.
I realized that when we first set the server up, we started the log files and they just kept collecting and collecting over the past year or so.
So much for my relaxing Sunday morning.

The Crazy Horse Saloon
Posting from Chico, CA Graduation Night Saturday Night / Sunday Morning 5/21/2006
Well, our daughter and several of her friends managed to get us and another couple (parents of a friend also graduating) to the Crazy Horse Saloon in Chico. She wanted to buy us some drinks for a celebration of her graduating with a Degree in Business Marketing from CSU, Chico State University. Quite a mixture of mostly Country with some Rock n Role.
She needed to borrow some money from us in order to do this. It really is the thought that counts...
We spent the day going to the three hour graduation ceremony from 8:00 am till 11:00 am. Then a late breakfast brunch at Nash's Restaurant. Then with her friend and the friend's parents over for some shopping at the local Costco for some party food for Sunday.
Chico State University has such a large graduating class that they have to do graduation over a two day period. Half of the schools' graduates go on Saturday, the other half on Sunday. Different majors on each day.
Need to get some shut eye.
Yee Ha!

News I Wish I Could Comment
Nationally Syndicated Columnists write excellent articles at various online news outlets but many of these news websites do not provide a means for comments from their readers.
With the blogging softwares that are available, there is no reason for major websites not to include the ability for readers to provide their thoughts online. Granted, with the amount of spam online it certainly creates an opportunity for the spammers to take advantage of the situation. However, there can be controls that could very easily be implemented to provide this valuable service for readers of the online publications.
Each columnist could be given control over his/her area for monitoring the comments. There would be the added benefit of feedback to the writer for the current story; as well as any future ideas that might come out of the comments. Readership would increase , because readers would want to see what others thought of the story, plus those that do leave a comment are more likely to return in the future. With email notification, comments could be monitored before they are placed on the site. Or the comments could be posted to begin with and if it was truly someone taking advantage of the situation to be off topic, the comment could be deleted.
Actually, any news article, whether the article is written by a reporter or columnist could provide this outlet for their readers. Yes, it is true that most people will not place a comment, but for those that want to become more interactive on the Internet, by providing their thoughts and ideas this would be an excellent opportunity online.
News organizations could help brand themselves by providing this form of media outlet. I think a lot of news websites are living in the pre Internet days; when they had newspaper subscriptions that were going up and up. Now however, newspapers are loosing subscriptions like a bucket with a hole in the bottom. People are letting their subscriptions lapse and instead are getting their news online. Even the local news can be found simply by targeting a Google News local news search for the various keywords. Email alerts can be set up using Google Alerts. With this service, news can be delivered daily to your email box.
So, National, International, Local, and Global News organizations better think quickly and provide a means for comments on their websites. With the Internet, the jump from one Brand to another is simply a click away.

Bottled Water - Is It Safe?
How Safe is the Water We Drink From The Tap vs. Bottled Water?
An interesting article from www.emagazine.com suggests that bottled water is not necessarily better for you or the environment.
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: - Despite the Hype, Bottled Water is Neither CLEANER nor GREENER Than Tap Water
The message is clear: Bottled water is "good" water, as opposed to that nasty, unsafe stuff that comes out of the tap. But in most cases tap water adheres to stricter purity standards than bottled water, whose source—far from a mountain spring—can be wells underneath industrial facilities. Indeed, 40 percent of bottled water began life as, well, tap water.

Steelers Got One For The Thumb
Pittsburgh on the day the Steelers won the Super Bowl XL Championship
Being in Pittsbsurgh last night was almost as good as being at the game! The city is Alive!
At the end of the game I opened my door and listened to the ROAR! There were fireworks going off from every direction. People were pouring out of their houses (even though the wind chill was 13). Everyone was singing Steeler songs and waving their Terrible Towels. The entire Gateway Clipper Fleet were blowing their boat whistles . The trains were blowing their whistles all the way through town; not just at the crossings.
After speaking with my kids and brothers on the phone, I just could not resist so I put on my long underwear and hiking boots and ventured out on the treacherously icy roads to trek on down to Carson Street, carrying and waving my Terrible Towel. Each time a car went past, if you wave the towel, they'd blow their horn.
| |||
A victory parade Tuesday for the Steelers will start at Mellon Arena at 11 a.m. |
People were hugging and smiling at strangers everywhere.
Some of the kids (oops, younger-than-me generation) were so excited they were turning cartwheels and carrying each other around on their shoulders. Shouts of Steelers were everywhere. As I joined the throng parading up and down Carson Street, people were so joy filled they were "high fiving" each other (and me) as we passed. It was a rolling river of joy. Everyone was happy, except for the police. They were clad in riot gear and stationed shoulder to shoulder across S. 18th Street, "just in case", they said. There were four mounted on horseback, all with their riot gear (both body and face shields) in place. They were not needed here. The morning news said that in all of the city there were only eight arrests. I did hear that in Oakland there was a car overturned and a couch set on fire (that person must have been from W. Va. Univ. :-); they do that there).
There is Black and Gold everywhere... in every store window, house window, and on nearly every person. I took my digital camera along to take photos but had forgotten to check the batteries. Got only two shots before it went dead. Oh, well.
The experience was what I was there for!
We did it. We got our "one for the thumb".

Way To Go Steelers!
Great Game For the Steelers
Taking care of business: One, Two, Three.
Troy Polamalu turned in another hard-hitting performance in Sunday's AFC title game. (David Zalubowski / Associated Press)
The Steelers have gone through the top three seeded teams.
On to Detroit for the Big One, Super Bowl 40, Steelers vs. Seahawks.
Congratulations also to the Seattle Seahawks for making it to the Super Special event. With both Pittsburgh and Seattle with similar scores in their playoff wins it should make for a great game.
See the FOX Sports story: Steelers-Seahawks should really be Super
Now with a couple weeks worth of rest, both teams will surely be studing each other for the big event. Jeorme Bettis will be going back to his hometown of Detroit to play in front of what will most likely be a Steelers crowd.

Steeler Fans Showing Support
Steelers' Fans Showing Support
Ben Roethlisberger has the Steelers one game away from a return to the Super Bowl. (Darron Cummings / Associated Press)
My, what a change from last week to this week in the news reporting of the Steelers. Seems as though the Steelers have earned some respect with the news media. See the Fox Sports story, Steelers, Seahawks the picks for Sunday "Joey Porter is on a roll."
What is it about the Steelers that you can seem to find fans everywhere?
Does it come from the heart of Pittsburgh with the hard working people of Southwestern Pennsylvania? Is it the background that people around the country can relate to? Is it those cold winter days in past years where the Three Rivers have been frozen over that invoke such a fond reverence for such a hard working team? Is it the close community of friendly people that would stop on the street and reminisce with a stranger about the Terry Brandshaw era and the Steel Curtain and then talk about the new era with "Big Ben" and "The Bus," as Ben Roethlisberger and Jerome Bettis are affectionately called?
Fans everywhere are showing their support. From Pennsylvania to California, from New York to Florida, to the heartland of America, and to all corners of the world, fans are gearing up for the game. From the guy on the street of San Jose, that has a Steeler hat on and the conversation simply begins with, "It's going to be a great game to watch with the Steelers and the Broncos going at it."
Make no mistake about it, fans know that it is going to be a tough game. The Broncos certainly have their home field advantage and the mile high stadium, but these two teams have been equalized by the fact that they have not played each other this season. I am sure the homework has been done by both teams looking for the weaknesses of one another, analyzing the quarterback and key players, looking at what plays have been called in certain situations; but it still comes down to game time. Which ever team executes better with the least mistakes will win. I just hope that is the Steelers.

Minutes later, with the Penguins playing out the fading minutes of a loss, the dwindling crowd chanted, "Here we go Steelers, here we go."
In any other city, hearing a football fight chant at a hockey game might seem strange. Not hearing it in Pittsburgh would be bizarre.

Steelers Win 21-18 Over Colts
Steelers Win 21-18 Over Colts
Congratulations to the Steelers
Al Behrman, Associated Press
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger celebrates after the Steelers beat the Indianapolis Colts 21-18 in their NFL divisional playoff football game at Indianapolis.
Ben Roethlisberger not only had to have his "A" game but he probably saved what would have been a winning touchdown by the Colts when Jerome Bettis fumbled on the 2 yardline. See the rest of the story at:

Game Time Just 6 or 7 Hours Away
Here is something not heard much out here on the west coast but it will be interesting to see how the Steelers handle Peyton Manning when he goes into his directing traffic before the ball is snapped. Hopefully the Steelers can ignore all the sign language, the pointing, the misdirection and what ever else is shouted at the line-of-scimmage to try and confuse the defense.
Ben Roethlisberger certainly will have to have his "A" game. If he stays calm and picks away at the Colts defense I think it will be a much closer game than what the sports writers and oddsmakers are saying. Get up-to-the minute Steelers news reports directly to your email box or go online.
